This was my third gig of the Matachin Autumn Tour and definitely the best. It was a sell-out but fortunately I was able to get hold of a couple of returns at the last minute. The venue was lovely and perfect for Bellowhead with a sprung dance floor downstairs and balcony seating. Inspite of playing in London the night before the band had as much energy as ever and it was infectious.
The band started with “Jordan†which is a great opener and during the course of the evening we were treated to most of Matachin, with added emphasis on any ghostly elements in the songs as it was Hallowe’en. A few spooky noises were added to some of the (extended?) dance tunes too! Sam demonstrated a new dance “The Librarian†before “If You Will Not Have Me...†which was very well received by the audience and it was very funny watching the brass trying to get to grips with it! (You can find it on Youtube) As usual the set ended with “Frogs’ Legs and Dragon’s Teeth†I turned round at one point to look at the audience and the whole place was jumping! I was able to chat to Sam, Squeezy and Pete afterwards so that rounded off the evening perfectly.
I've never seen a band so many times on a tour before, and am so glad I did it. Each gig was great in its own way, and yet different. I'm seeing them next in Pontardawe in January, can't wait!
