Tim Moon - Mutton Town
INSIDE MOTION BHL042
Mutton Town represents the studio follow up to the highly acclaimed 2000 album ‘Anger and Kiss’, albeit with live albums, re-releases and projects between. It features 14 new original tracks with Tim playing all the instruments from rocking drums to gentle balalaikas. Details below.
1. MUTTON TOWN. (3.49) (Moon)
Mandola, Mandolin, 2 Mando-Cellos, Drums,Tambourine, Vocals.
A song about those ladies who never know when to stop, The title comes from the saying ‘mutton dressed as lamb’. In addition to the mandolin driven title track the song also features as two bonus tracks, the original demo recorded in the garden, and a special recording using cuatros for Bradford Mela 2008.
2. ONLY FRIEND. - 3.49) (Moon)
2 Stick Dulcimers, Viola, Vase, Peruvian Bass Flute, Vocals.
A bleak song about a life rolling down hill featuring a stick dulcimer. At one point there was a plan to build an album around the first two songs and ‘They Don’t Know’ as a concept of a snapshot of urban living, but this was never persued,
3. THE MONEY KEEPS ROLLING IN (Moon) / OVER THE WATERFALL. - (Trad. Arr. Moon) (3.28)
2 Bouzoukis, 5 String Banjo, Banjolin, Mandolin, Viola, Fiddle, Anglo Concertina, Ocean Drum, Vocals
A tongue in cheek song about the way money talks, which tumbles in to an English dance tunem sometimes known as ‘The Soldiers Joy’
4. THEY DON’T KNOW. (4.07) (Moon)
3 Acoustic guitars, Appalachian Dulcimer, Flute, All Vocals
Love takes many forms, and the third song of thr triology looks at three of those couples who make you wonder how they ever got together.
5. WOOLEN MILLS AND WHISTLES. (3.06) (Moon)
Acoustic guitar, 2 Electric Guitars, Bass Guitar, ‘Cello, Chinese Whistle, Vocals
One of two songs on the album which were previously recorded for a limied edition CD. This autobiographical piece fondly remembers the West Riding of the 50s and 60s.
6. TAKE ME AWAY. (5.34) (Moon)
Sitar, Vase, Clarinet, Vocals
The second song from the CD EP mentioned above is the story of someone finding themsellves alone in their twilight years, and features the Indian instruments which Tim became known for in his time with The Sex Patels.
7. PENNINE WINTER. (1.23) (Moon)
2 Indian Harmoniums, Bowed Psaltry, whistle
An intrumental recalling one of those bitter white Yorkshire days.
8. SOOSHÂ / MONKS MARCH. (Trad. Arr. Moon) (2.46)
Acoustic guitar, Bass guitar, Mandola, Melodion, Drums, Vocals, ‘Cello.
This song, about Tims dog, first appeared on an animal charity CD. In the middle is the morris tune ‘Monks March’.
9. GOING FOR A CAR RIDE. (Moon) (1.55)
Tenor Ukulele, Kazoo, washboard, whizzer, drums, Frog Scraper, Car Horn, Vocals
This song was written many years ago and made its debut on Pennine Radio, After a couple of live outings it was dropped, but remained a firm favourite of Nigel Schofield, for whom this new recording was embarked on,
10. THIS ENGLAND,
Piano, Whistle, Vocals
The next three songs were originally going to appear on the never issued album ‘Critical Backlash’, but when the recordings were abandoned the best songs were recorded for ‘Invicta’, That album, which features, among others, Dave Pegg of Fairport Convention, Anna Ryder and Gary Boyle, is awaiting final touches and will appear in due course. However these three tracks were transferred and newly recorded for this album. This Englamd is a patriotic little song checking Shakespeare, Betjeman and Arthurian legend.
11. BEWARE OF LOVE. (Moon) (4.37)
Electric guitar, Bass Guitar, Didgeridoo, Bass Recorder, Vocals.
Looking for a new approach for this song it changed from one of gentle regret to one of bitter rccrimination, changing from acoustic banjo to screaming electric guitars along the way.
12. ROUGH BAND / 7 GREEN HOPES. (Moon) (2.44)
2 Balalaikas, Fiddle, Spoons, , Ocean Drum, Bells, Vocals
The final song of the trio charts the final years of a mystical band and finishes with a dance tune in an exotic time signature.
13. THE PATH. (Moon) (4.54)
Acoustic Guitar, Bass Guitar, Lap Steel Guitar, Piano, Organ, Vocals
The only studio written track. I knew how I wanted the album to end and had a title, I wanted the feel of an anthemic hymn, hence the church organ in the extended coda,
14, THURGOS LAMENT. (Moon) (2.21)
Pocket Saxophone
A kind of encore. It was recorded live in Thurgoland tunnel on the old railway between Penistone and Sheffield which is now a footpath. The natural acoustics were so amazing that I had to use them, and you can hear Soosh walking around in the background.
