Uiscedwr @ Ely Folk Club 12/12/07
This was the first time I'd seen Uiscedwr, or even heard them. I was invited by a few mates to go, so I went on the basis of what is on their myspace. It was a great, great gig, and I came away uttery wowed (with their latest album, Circle, in hand) I'm afraid I have no idea of a set list, apart from the fact that it included:
Not the Hurricane
Flea Circus (amazing Cormac solo, more below)
The Music Bringer
Yorkshire Tea (in which I was eyed by Kevin for not singing)
America (one of my favs, beautiful song)
Esta Levista
Feathers
Escobar
The Beast
There were a few others, but I can't remember them
It was a fully acoustic gig and I was amazed at the amount of sound they produced. Anna looked very healthy and played some amazing fiddle. She sang pretty well too ;-) Kevin was great and told plenty of 'funny' anecdotes, including one about a 75 year old woman putting her hands down Swarbs trousers in the middle of the street (don't ask!) I was blown away by Cormac. I have never seen anyone ever play bodrahn or percussion like it. Simply amazing. I couldn't see him very well (only the top of his head) or see what he was hitting when, but he sounded amazing. The best bit was during Flea Circus (penultimate number) he did a Bodrahn solo, which lasted about 5 mins, and incorperated Another One Bites the Dust. Fantastic. The whole band played with a fire and vigour that I've not seen for along time.
As it is nearly Christmas, after the inveral, we had a short pantomime!! Ruthie, who runs the Folk Club, wrote it, and it was called Nick Quittington. Anna played Nick Quittington, Kevin played Craig the chav (with a tartan scarf to make him look 'chavish'. I think it was supposed to be Burberry. People of my age [ie teen] will know what I'm talking about) and Cormac played a female Morris dancer called Jenny! (including the bonnet, bells and high voice) Other characters were played by members of the folk club admin team. It was based around the idea of Molly Dancing (East Anglian Morris) and Plough Monday, didn't really have a story line, but was hilarious!
And all for £4!!! (I'm a junior) The whole evening was great. I came away with their CD and will definately trying to see them again. I beg you to do the same. The CD is great, but the live performance is much, much better. Oh, and (message at the gig from Anna) make sure you give blood if you can and get on the bone marrow donors list!!
